About The Michael Hoefflin Foundation for Children's Cancer
The Michael Hoefflin Foundation for Children's Cancer is a 501(c)(3) public non-profit organization that was started in 1995 by nine year-old Michael Hoefflin and his parents Chris and Sue. Michael succumbed to cancer in 1996 and passed away at the age of 10. A very personal venture, Chris, Sue and their neighbors fostered a special and unique mission of defeating cancer one child at a time. Over the last 15 years, the foundation has grown into an organization with hundreds of volunteers. We provide direct financial, emotional and practical support to children with cancer and their families.
Our programs begin at the earliest time of crisis, when a child is first diagnosed with cancer and admitted to the hospital. We show up with a "Kare Kit" filled with practical items, such as blankets, flip flops, brushes and toys. More importantly, we make a statement that we are here for them, we have been through this, and we will provide support and comfort.
Other programs offer emergency and ongoing financial support when the expenses associated with cancer become overwhelming. We offer counseling for parents and siblings, grief counseling and support groups for parents and siblings who lose a child to cancer. Tutoring services are available for the children and their siblings, as are college scholarships. We visit the children and families while they are in the hospital, offering emotional support and advocacy. Throughout the year, we offer social activities and events exclusively for our families. When a child does pass on, we provide a memorial gift to help offset the cost of final expenses.
Additionally, recognizing that our resources are limited, we support unique and innovative research where we can have an impact.
